EPI-Hub: the Center of the Foundation

The vision of Elserino Piol was never destined to remain confined within the pages of a book or the successes of the past; it has found its home in a physical space where new generations can continue to generate value.

EPI-HUB is the Foundation’s center for experimentation and ideation: a space in the heart of the Belluno Prealps, conceived as an open ecosystem where strategic thinking and creativity converge and take root.

A WORKSHOP with the Spirit of CO-DESIGN

EPI-Hub overlooks the square of Valmorel—E.PI.’s birthplace—occupying the ground floor of an ancient 600 sqm building, fully renovated in 2025.

The architectural structure of the Hub is a tangible manifesto of the Foundation’s values: “It is an environment designed for the mix of functions it contains,” notes Architect Manlio Olivotto (supporting member of Elserino Piol Foundation).  It is a place designed to be dynamic, fluid, and adaptable to any design requirement. The objective is to provide a point of reference, unity, and mutual inspiration, promoting territorial development with a sophisticated, avant-garde drive.

The construction is itself a work of restoration, built with natural resources and shaped by the essential lines – an aggregate derived from the evolving needs of different eras. The design choices elevate and modernize the project, aiming to interpret the spirit of Elserino through the language and style of contemporary architecture.

The perimeter walls of the Hub are clad in a cage structure containing river stones: a material tribute to the earth, mimicking a dialogue between the Foundation and its surroundings.  Moreover, they embody the rugged and irrepressible soul of E.Pi… a gesture of reverence and remembrance, tangibly linking his figure to the project. The original layout was enhanced by a “U-shaped” pavilion that breaks the rigid formality and creates geometric movement; together with large windows, it provides breath and symbolizes transparency and openness toward the outside world.

Inside, the hall is conceived as a multi-functional environment. Natural larch, invisible technological equipment, satellite connectivity, and the absence of fixed barriers—all elements that configure this office as a place of tomorrow, capable of hosting digital nomads in a context of absolute creative isolation.

Landmark of Modern SUSTAINABILITY

While EPI-Hub occupies the ground floor, the first and second floors house the Locanda Valmorel e the future InfoPoint.

Architect Olivotto’s intervention extends beyond the Foundation’s headquarters to the revitalization of the entire structural core: a project that breathes life into a context that was once fragile and is now vibrant. Furthermore, every entity has been conceived according to the highest standards of ecological sustainability. Energy efficiency is ensured by a biomass plant, a 20 kW photovoltaic system with storage batteries, and a heat recovery system.

The Locanda represents a cornerstone of Valmorel hospitality, which has deep historical roots because having witnessed the territory grow, fade, and flourish again. The renovation has enhanced the building with a large panoramic terrace, preserving its centuries-old vocation for welcoming guests. Meanwhile, the light wood finishes in the restaurant and suites reflect local tradition, providing comfort and warmth to all visitors.

Finally, opening in May opposite the entrance to the Locanda’s bar, the InfoPoint will be managed by the Foundation, serving as the tourist and information gateway to the area. This represents the latest piece of the territorial redevelopment mosaic: an ecosystem providing the foundations for a model of scattered hospitality

Valmorel

Valmorel is a hamlet of the municipality of Limana, in the province of Belluno and the birthplace of Elserino Piol (December 8, 1931). Evacuated during the war and later moved to Ivrea and Milan for work, Piol remained attached to his hometown where he used to spend a few weeks in the summer and a few winter days at Christmas at the family home.

Located about 800 meters above sea level, this hamlet, like many other mountain communities, faces economic and social difficulties due to depopulation, aging population, dwindling services, and economic activities.

The initiatives of the Elserino Piol Foundation are aimed at reversing this trend. Valmorel has the right characteristics to constitute the operational starting point of the Foundation. The Foundation has a national scope, but the idea of using technology as a tool to repopulate rural and mountain areas finds an ideal ground in Valmorel to be a «laboratory of ideas» that can then be applied in other similar areas across the country.
